What I learned About Therapy

  • I have learned a lot of Italian vocabulary and have been able to use my knowledge of some Spanish to communicate

  • I have been able to recognize more signs of behavior and disabilities strictly from body language, and I have become more aware of body language and gestures due to the language barrier

  • I have compared the therapy used in America versus therapy in Italy, and I have found that American therapy seems to be more structured. There is more documentation happening during therapy sessions and the short and long-term goals are extremely specific. Here in Italy, they tend to have broader goals and don't document anything during the actual session, allowing more time for the therapy. For the most part, the techniques and methods of therapy are very similar and I have gained a wider variety of ways to treat specific irregularities. I have learned that Speech-language pathologists in America are valued at a greater stake and receive far more credit and recognition, as well as a much higher salary.
